Plain-English Distinctions

Understanding SIL vs. SDA

The NDIS splits housing and support into two separate funding streams so you maintain choice and control.

SDA = The Home

Specialist Disability Accommodation

SDA refers specifically to the physical bricks-and-mortar housing designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. It covers purpose-built modifications, ceiling hoists, automated doorways, and robust materials.

In simple terms: SDA is the physical building you live in.

SIL = The Support

Supported Independent Living

SIL refers to the person-to-person support services provided inside the home. This covers assistance with daily tasks, personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication routines, and developing independent living skills.

In simple terms: SIL is the team of support workers and nurses helping you live your daily life.

Flexible Housing Options

STA, MTA & ILO Explained

Clear, honest guidelines on how short-term, medium-term, and individualised living arrangements operate.

STA

Short-Term Accommodation

A short-term stay away from your usual home where funded and appropriate. Examples include planned respite, skill-building getaways, and supported holiday stays.

STA covers short-term accommodation, personal support, food, and agreed activities in a supportive setting.

MTA

Medium-Term Accommodation

Temporary accommodation funding for up to 90 days in specific circumstances—such as when waiting for your long-term SDA home to be finished, waiting for major home modifications, or transitioning safely from hospital.

Please note: MTA funding covers the accommodation cost only; personal care and daily living supports are funded separately where approved.

ILO

Individualised Living Options

An alternative living arrangement tailored around individual relationships rather than one fixed group home model. May include host family living, co-residency, or personalised companion support.

Arrangements carry no standard number of support hours; support is completely co-designed around your lifestyle and funded package.
